Consumers now have a powerful tool available for monitoring their credit histories. The Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003 amended the Fair Credit Reporting Act to include consumers' rights to obtain one free credit report annually from each of the nationwide specialty consumer reporting agencies. This provides consumers with a free alternative to maintaining control over contents of their credit reports. With the growth of identity theft in recent years, this could not have come at a better time. We encourage everyone to take advantage of this right to the fullest extent. To improve the benefit, we suggest acquiring a credit report every four months from a different reporting agency. This may increase your chances of catching abnormalities soon after they occur.
